Diner Porn Needs Your Help!
Hello followers! We’ve been hinting at the potential for a Diner Porn road trip for sometime now, but guess what… it’s finally happening! This fall, we’ll be running a Kickstarter campaign to fund the trip and the resulting Diner Porn book, with all-new content! We’re working really hard behind-the-scenes right now to perfect all the details, but first…
We need your help in deciding on our route!
We could just head over to Yelp and try to find the best diners that way, but this blog is about more than just “good reviews.” We want a story, and we know that we might have to get a bit off-the-beaten-path to find one. So here’s the deal: we’re going to give you our general route, and you’re going to tell us your favorite diners in and around the cities we’ll be visiting and highways we’ll be taking (since some of the best diners are the ones on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere!). We don’t want the most famous diners—we want the ones you like the best. The ones that mean something to the community.
Do you know where has the best milkshakes in Philadelphia? The nicest waitresses in Kalamazoo? The best old-school decor in St. Louis? Drop it in our “ask” box or e-mail us at freedinerporn@gmail.com. Let us know if you want to meet up along the trip—your face (or your cup of coffee) could end up in our book. Also message us if you have accommodations you could offer along the way—that would be an amazing help, and we’re not picky! Couches (or backyards where we can set up our tent) are just fine.
Here’s what we’re starting with: Diner Porn Takes America
We know this will probably change as we confirm diners and lodging, but we had to start somewhere. Here’s the list of cities for easier viewing:
Philadelphia, PABaltimore, MDWashington, DCRichmond, VARaleigh, NCCharleston, SCSavannah, GAAtlanta, GAMobile, ALNew Orleans, LAJackson, MSMemphis, TNNashville, TNSt. Louis, MOChicago, ILKalamazoo, MICleveland, OHPittsburgh, PABinghamton, NY
But please remember—we’re not tied to these cities and we’re willing to travel further for really good diners!
Share with your friends here on Tumblr, on Facebook, on Twitter… we want to reach as many diner lovers as possible before we make our final decisions.
Thanks so much for helping, as always. We’re so lucky to be able to share our passions with all of you.

Artist Spotlight: Lauren Dean

rpdsociety:

Today, we published a piece called “Madness”—a striking, image-rich short story that depicts the struggle that a diagnosis of bipolar disorder can create in a relationship. I was so intrigued by the writing that I wanted to talk to its author—and she graciously agreed to Skype with me, all the way from Alabama. We covered it all: Lauren’s own bipolar diagnosis, writing as therapy, bipolar disorder and relationships, and maintaining creativity throughout treatment for a mental illness. We look forward to hearing more from Lauren!

As one of the editors at rpdsociety, I had the chance to Skype with Lauren Dean, one of our newest contributors. Read what she has to say about writing, mental illness, and relationships above. The read her fiction here.

Crossroads Diner in Grand Gorge, NY

After being drawn in off a mountain highway by this diner sign, we were disappointed to find this chrome gem abandoned—although the interior looks brand-spankin’-new. Through a little Googling and asking around we discovered that this place, called Crossroads, was purchased (and apparently renovated) in 2008, but was never opened! Anyone know the story? Anyone know how we can buy it? (Just kidding… kind of.)

One of our latest adventures. Whatdya think—the Eberhardt Smith Diner? It does have a ring to it…
